Vijayanagara rose on the ashes of the ancient southern kingdoms destroyed by the Delhi Sultans in the 14th century CE. Vijayanagara Empire was forged by Harihara and Bukka and his Sangama brethren who earlier served the Kakatiya and Kampili kingdoms. The empire dominated the South for two centuries and profoundly shaped its culture.
Babur describes 2 pagan kings of 16th century CE India - the famous Rana Sanga and Raja of Vijayanagar who he says was “greater both in territory and army.” Though Karnataka cannot claim sole ownership, Hampi, the empire’s capital is located there.
