India’s freedom was guaranteed and was a matter of time. But there was no guarantee of its unity.
The politics of those times were as murky as today. Several Kings of princely States feared loss of their powers. Some even wished to stay independent under the British Crown. It took Sardar Patel to bring them around, the man who was Home Minister, and would never become India’s Prime Minister.
